So for the first time since I broke my wrist six months ago I’ve been around Stone Mountain and back, a 26 mile ride. I’d previously made it to the town itself, but not into the park and around the giant blob of white supremacist granite. Partly this was to do with recovering from the injury, but I think by a certain point it was laziness. I do regret not having ridden out there with the inestimable Cycledork when he was in town.
Riding my road bike has been making the wrist ache quite a bit, so I did have some trepidation about doing this long and hilly a ride. But I’m trying to concentrate on my form, to take as much weight off the wrist as possible. Making sure I keep my elbows bent seems to help. Right now, post-ride, I have a mild ache rather than actual pain, so that’s good.
I’d forgotten how fantastic the ride round the mountain is: super road surface, a bike lane for 2/3 of the way, and the weird juxtaposition of a giant neo-Confederate monument (site of the Ku Klux Klan’s rededication) and predominantly African-American park users. Everyone running around the park is in outlandishly good shape. It truly is a place of supreme hotness.
There’s also something nice about getting to half my weekly target of 50 miles in just one ride. The other 25 comes from rides to work, or 16 mile rides to within sight of the mountain, without going all the way out. Or lots of small trips to the local coffee shop to do work.
Anyway, I feel truly back after the broken wrist and want to head out to the mountain as much as possible this summer.
